ANIMUS
THE CORE: BLACK ROOM
THEORY

ANALYSIS

Since we first visited a First Civ. site in ACII, and the architecture, symbols, wall engravings and technology of First Civ. sites have caught my attention the most. And I kept waiting eagerly with each play through/replay of each new game to reach the parts where we get inside a First Civ. site and interact with one of the Pieces of Eden.

After the release of Revelations, I couldn’t help but notice that the locations manifested by the Animus in Desmond’s Journey segments along with The Lost Archive DLC shared a very similar architecture as First Civ. sites. The were so beautiful, so minimalistic and so modern/futuristic in a way that you can’t help but notice that the same architecture made both locations.

Now, I’m well aware of the fact that the architects (developers and artists) of the games often try to keep everything familiar in terms of design, and reproduce the elements that fans admired so much along with reusing assets and modifying them to create new settings. However, when ACIII came out, the architecture of The Grand Temple was even more similar to Desmond’s Journey and The Lost Archive locations. The huge, plain concrete walls, the pillars, the lightning system, the engravings. Everything seemed like it’s based on the same design blueprints as the aforementioned segments of AC:Revelations. In the very beginning of AC:Revelations, we’re told that we’re in the “safe mode” of the Animus, where there are just basic physics and raw data.

DESIGN

As we enter the “gates” to Desmond’s Journey (or start The Lost Archive DLC) missions, Desmond comments on how we’re in the “guts” of the Animus where there’s raw data, including Desmond’s (and Clay’s) own memories displayed in various cryptic ways, whether as a projection on the walls, the appearance of distinctive and out-of-place objects that do not match the architecture of the place, like a psychiatrists’ table and couch or Abstergo industries interiors or even some references to ancient historical symbols, cuneiform writings on walls..etc.

ANCIENT MEMORIES

We were told that Desmond and Clay have high concentration of First Civ. DNA as well as being able to access various points of history through their genetic memory, which is evident from Desmond and Lucy’s speech when she told him that Clay could access various ancestors and he insisted on going to South Africa (possibly to Eden), and also when Desmond and Shaun share an optional conversation in ACIII, they wonders about wanting to turn the dial back all the way to First Civ. times, meaning that these memories of that period are indeed saved in the DNA of Desmond and Clay, whom are now a “program” in the Animus.

THEORY

Since the “guts” of the Animus where these memories take place are some sort of a recycle bin or quarantine folder or perhaps a section where all types of memories are disorganized and displayed randomly, and since Desmond and Clay’s DNA (both used the Animus, and the latter is ‘saved’ within the guts of the Animus) have and are able to access their ancestral memories from various points of history, and also that these partitions of the Animus display genetic memories randomly, as I said above, then it is highly possible that the architecture of these locations is inspired by what a distant ancestor of Desmond in First Civ. times have seen in that era.

So we have for example walls, buildings and rooms shaped the same way as First Civ. locations while other elements are from Desmond’s memories, mixed with various other historical periods and symbols seen or created by distant ancestors of Desmond and Clay.
