Netflix has just announced a live action show for Assassin’s Creed in a short teaser, and confirmed that they entered a content agreement with Ubisoft, the first of which is the live action show. Ubisoft’s very own Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as show’s Executive Producers. In a press release, Netflix described the show as an “epic, genre-bending live action adaptation”. Search for a show runner for the project is currently underway.

In addition, it was confirmed that part of the content agreement, an animated and an anime projects will also be developed, though not much has been addressed regarding the nature or the time frame for the two projects.

It was previously announced that a Netflix anime was in the works, produced by Adi Shankar, who worked on the Castlevania Netflix anime. Adi Shankar told Polygon in regards to the project “In the same way that Castlevania is about generations of a family across different time periods, Assassin’s Creed is more about a warring ideology,” Shankar said. “That is what Assassin’s Creed represents, that both [Assassins and Templars] have their own hypocrisies built into their own ideologies — and I want to explore those different, conflicting ideologies. That is the core mechanic of what makes Assassin’s Creed work.”

In the Assassin’s Creed fiction, Cain — as in the Biblical brothers Cain and Abel — founded the order that would eventually become known as the Knights Templar. One of the main differences between the Templars and the Assassins is their position on free will. While the Assassins hold that free will is central to humanity’s prosperity, the Templars oppose it, believing that people need order and structure to succeed.

Whether the anime will still be based on these ideas or has completely changed remains to be seen. Until then, stay tuned for more updates. Meanwhile, you can watch the short teaser for the live-action show here.
